Welcome to First Grade!
We made it through our first full week. We are establishing our routines in the classroom. I feel the students are adjusting well!
Continue to look for a phonics word list and reading vocabulary list in your student’s take home folder. I encourage you to study and practice the phonics words nightly as well as read the vocabulary words. Each Friday we will have a test on the phonics words. Your child will have to write each word and correctly identify a specific phonemic skill for each set of words.
This week in:
Math: We will be indentifying different shapes, discussing new math terms, and talking about various aspects of a graph.
Reading: We will read from our reading books, Look at That! and Can You Find It? Look for your child's reading book to come home every Monday and Wednesday. "Book in the Bag" will come home every Tuesday and Thursday. In this bag, you will find short stories your child will need to read at home. You will also find a bright orange paper in the bag that you are to sign showing that your child read the book.
Phonics: We will review consonant letters j, h, m, and l with the vowel "a". Please practice these words at home with your child. We will have a test on these words this Friday.
Religion: We will be talking about our parish community gathering in church to celebrate Mass. We will also discuss objects found in the Catholic church. Students will be able to recognize the cross on a church as a sign of Jesus.
Our first Home and School Meeting will be held Tuesday, September 14th. I will be sending out more information later next week. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns!
Thanks!
Miss Hummel
