Fr. Don’s Doodlings
Elsewhere in this Bulletin you’ll find information about the Annual Mission Appeal, which will take place next weekend. I’m sure you will appreciate the presentation that will be given by Fr. Ramon at all the Masses. And I encourage you to give him a warm reception and to be as generous as you can in the collection that will be taken up.
Next weekend turns out to be an excellent one for a guest preacher since I will be away, and this will take a bit of the load off of Frs. James and Tom. Some of you will remember that I had brochures in church some months ago about a tour to Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and culminating in attendance at the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany. Well, that’s where I’m headed.
I’ll be flying out of Chicago on Thursday, Aug. 5th, and will be across the “pond” for ten days. For a long time I was paying very little attention to this trip, since it seemed a long way off, and also since I have been rather consumed with things here. But now that the trip is close I’ve been doing some reading and am getting more excited about this wonderful opportunity as a way of celebrating my 40th Jubilee in the priesthood.
This Passion Play has a very long history, going back to 1633, when the people were suffering from the Thirty Years War and also a horrible plague. The story is that the people of the town prayed to God that they might be spared from the ravages of war and sickness, and that if God protected them they promised to produce a play every ten years depicting the life and death of Jesus. The death rate went down dramatically, and they’ve kept their promise ever since 1634.
This year is the 41st time they are producing the Passion Play. It runs from May 15 to October 3, 2010, and there are to be 102 performances, with over 2,000 of the townspeople involved in various different capacities. Running time for the play is seven hours with a break in the middle for dinner. So, as I say, I’m looking forward more and more to this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Please pray that our trip is safe and that it will be a deep and spiritually enriching experience for all in our tour group.
I want to mention a couple of other things here:
We are getting geared up for our celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the founding of St. Francis Solanus Parish with the concert that will be given on August 28th by Steve Angrisano. This is going to be a wonderful not-to-be-missed event. We want it to be a celebration, not only for our own parish, but for the
(continued, Fr. Don’s Doodlings, p. 2)
entire city of Quincy. So if you haven’t put it in your “Hallmark Date Book” yet, please be sure to do so now.
And the Mass that Saturday evening will be at 4:00 p.m., followed by a delightful picnic dinner on the grounds here, so that afterward we can walk across the street to the Pepsi Arena at Quincy University for the concert. The picnic will be in the air conditioned school if the weather is too hot. The parish is supplying the meat, and you will be invited to bring a dish to share.
We’ve invited Bishop Thomas Paprocki to be with us and he is coming! He will preside and preach at the 4:00 p.m. Mass on August 28th.
Also, since I’ll be away for almost two weeks, I’ll be publishing the Financial Report of the parish in the bulletin, together with a letter, commenting on it, as Fr. Kurt had done in the past. That should give you some bedtime reading to put you to sleep.

Annual Mission Appeal
As part of the Missionary Plan of Cooperation, every parish hosts a mission appeal once a year. This year we will hear from “Missionhurst” – the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CICM).
We ask you to welcome Fr. Ramon Caluza, CICM, a Missionhurst missionary who will be speaking at all of our Masses on the weekend of August 7-8, to present a mission appeal. Fr. Ramon is assigned to the foreign mission of Dominican Republic and will be sharing his life and dedication to the people he serves.
Missionhurst – CICM was originally founded in 1862 for the conversion of China. Today, Missionhurst – CICM serves in some of the most remote places of Mongolia, Indonesia, Africa, Asia and Latin America. Unlike some relief organizations that come only when there is a news-making crisis, Missionhurst – CICM missionaries come prepared to stay, living among the people, sharing in their privations, and participating in the day-to-day effort needed to achieve life-long spiritual and material changes. In response to the people’s most urgent need, Missionhurst – CICM missionaries may start a new farming project, build a new chapel or school or lay clean water supply lines.
Fr. Ramon will be preaching at all the Masses and a second collection will be taken with proceeds going to Missionhurst – CICM. Envelopes will be in the pews next weekend. Please make out checks to St. Francis Parish, and all the money will be sent through our parish to the diocese which collects it and sends it on to Missionhurst. We encourage you to be generous in supporting this cooperative mission appeal.

The Portiuncula Indulgence
Have you ever noticed that big mural near the ceiling at the front of our church? Well, Monday, Aug. 2nd, is the Feast of the Portiuncula. No, it’s not Greek. It’s Italian. The Portiuncula is the little chapel that St. Francis of Assisi rebuilt when he heard Christ speaking to him there, telling him, “Go and rebuild my Church.” Not hearing the capital “C” in Church, Francis began rebuilding the little chapel which was dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels, and he loved it so much that he called it his “Little Portion,” (Portiuncula), and made it a sort of home base for himself and his brothers.
Later he asked the Pope if he would grant a special indulgence to those who came to pray there. The Pope agreed. Now that indulgence continues, and so on this feast day, a plenary indulgence can be gained by the faithful from noon on Aug. 1 to midnight on Aug. 2 by visiting any church. They need to recite the Our Father and the Creed for the Holy Father with some other prayer, and receive Reconciliation and Holy Communion within a week.
Happy Birthday!

Steve Angrisano Concert
on Saturday, August 28th
Bishop Thomas Paprocki will preside and preach at the 4:00 p.m. Mass. Immediately following Mass will be a smaller parish picnic where we ask our parishioners to bring a covered dish; the parish will provide the meat for the supper. Following that, the FREE concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will run until 9:00 p.m. at the Pepsi Arena at Quincy University. Steve Angrisano is an effective communicator for parish groups, youth, families, and religious educators in the church, so this concert is certain to be a great evening activity for our parish families to enjoy.
Please make plans to come and celebrate our Parish!!
