We started the school year with an exercise in seeing detail. It got the students out of summer mode and back into concentration mode. We all copied National Geographic magazine covers.
We then moved on to shading simple shapes to make them look 3 dimensonal. We also drew our own pictures using shading and some of us shaded with color.
We have worked on perspective, all of us drawing and painting landscapes. We talked about foreground and background and why we drew our trees in 2 different sizes (to show that one was close and one was in the distance).
Right now, we are all studying Vincent Van Gogh. We discussed how he painted from real life and things from his dreams. Those of us with art class on nice days have gone outside and drawn the front of our church. Those of us with art class on rainy days have drawn from our dreams and imaginations (which, this time of year seems to revolve around creepies and crawlies and a lot of haunted houses!) Most of us still have to paint our churches, which we will be doing in the style of Van Gogh.
The 5th graders are working on Native Indian Pottery. We made pinch pots and turned them into animals, which, technically are known as "effigy pots".
So this is what we've been doing in art class. I am working on a fun Christmas project for all of us to do. We will also be doing some kind of group project that we will put on display somewhere in the school for everyone to see.
